Awa Shijira–ori was created at the beginning of the Meiji Era (1868–1912), inspired by a kimono that had been hung out to dry and shrunk when it got wet in a rainstorm.Its characteristic feature is a unique unevenness called shibo, which is created by the difference in tension between the number and combination of warp and weft yarns. It takes great skill and experience to calculate the difference in tension to create the patterns and designs, but the texture is pleasant to the touch, light and easy to wear, and does not stick to the skin even when perspiring.
